Height Safety Equipment
Height Safety Equipment is usually associated with two main types: General height safety, Fall Arrest and Fall Restraint. General Height Safety would cover things like working on Scaffolding, Elevated Work Platforms, (EWP), Scissor Lifts and other Temporary Platforms and Ladders. Fall Arrest equipment is normally required, when personnel are required to work outside an enclosed platform and wear personal fall protection, this equipment will include a Full Body Harness fitted to a dual or single Lanyard, Inertia Reel or Static Line which in turn are attached to a Certified Anchor Point. If a fall occurs, the full body harness and lanyard distributes the impact throughout the body to keep the worker in an upright position. All Harnesses and Lanyards should be inspected on a three monthly basis, the wearer should carry out a visual inspection for tears, frays and contamination before each use, all inspections are recorded on a register. Fall Restraint; Fall Arrest Equipment can also be adapted to provide Fall Restraint which is where the worker is working at height close to an unprotected edge or fall area. A Fall Restraint System will comprise of a Full Body Harness worn on the top of clothing and again attached to a certified anchor point with an Adjustable Lanyard and connector such as a karabiner. When using an adjustable lanyard it is imperative that these workers receive the correct training in adjustable Fall Restraint Systems, by a qualified person.

Working at Height Safety Training

When referring to Height Safety it’s commonly thought that working from a height greater than 1.8 to 2M (about 6 feet) or above is designated as working at height, however most current regulations suggest that working from any height includes where a fall can cause injury; for example; working from a low ladder, or even standing on a chair to change a light bulb. In a Fall Protection and Prevention training course, you will learn about various systems employed to achieve 100% fall prevention and protection. A working at height safety training course may also qualify you for working at height onsite, providing the training company can supply a recognised certificate. Most Working at Height Training courses should also teach safety managers how to determine the dangers and hazards of each task and to correctly determine what types of PPE is necessary. National Working at Height Regulations are revised at regular intervals, these regulations are usually regarded as the minimum standard. Many Worksites will establish their own safety standards, this is allowed as long as they don’t go below or breach national standards, including Risk Assessment and Work Method Statement procedures.

Risk Assessment for Working at Height
Risk Assessments, Work Method Statements, (WMS), and Job Safety Analysis, (JSA), sheets should be prepared and submitted before any planned Work at Height begins on site, they need to be read and evaluated for their relevance to the task at hand. Risk Assessment and Job Safety Analysis should an implicit requirement on any site, and is usually required by other general and industry-specific regulations. Risk and Hazard analysis should identify the task to be accomplished and what sequence, (Job Step), to complete said task, in a safe and efficient manner.
