how do i rig windows vista to display and type chinese characters?

is it some software i need to download, or can i just switch my settings through control panel or something? i need to type with chinese characters for a paper in mandarin class.

Assuming you know how to type hanzi, you would go to the keyboard settings in the control panel, and select the Chinese input method you want to install.

Start > Control Panel > Click “Change keyboards or other input methods” on the right hand side next to the globe icon.

In the box that pops up, click the “Change keyboards…” button.

In the box that pops up, click “Add” and then the Chinese method you want, try the Pinyin IME if you’re not familiar with any. The Microsoft IME is what I use for Japanese input.
