The Difference Between Rock and Water Well Drilling Rig Equipment
Drill rig equipment is used for both rock and water well drilling. However, there is a difference in the type of equipment used to create water wells and drill through rock to mines for different types of materials.
Water well drill rig equipment is typically portable and easy to move from one location to another by using a trailer or truck. Water wells require top-head rotary style equipment. They may be cable tool or rotary drills. The water drilling rig equipment should be capable of reaching 20 feet to 600 feet. Some wells can be dug up to 3,000 feet before reaching any water.
Cable tool drill rigs have a much longer history than rotary equipment. This method of drilling for water digs to the stop. The cut dirt is then cleaned out of the hole before the sides of the hole are cased. When rotary drills are used, fluid is pumped into the hole to help remove the dirt and keep the moving components cool. The walls of the borehole are held open in the rotary method using hydraulic pressure. Once water wells are drilled, they must be cased with PVC or steel pipes in order to stop the walls of the well from collapsing. After the walls are cased, pumps are also used to transport the water.
Rock drill rig equipment is used anytime it is necessary to drill through rock. It can be used along with water well drilling rig equipment or to obtain rock samples. Oil and gas companies also use rock drilling. However, it is usually used in mining. When mining, the rock drill rig equipment is implemented for the purpose of removing ore or minerals that are still in usable condition. The equipment needs to preserve the rock and extract it in rock drilling. This is the exact opposite of drilling water wells or oil wells. Rather than being something without value, as it is in water well drilling, the solid material is the purpose of rock drilling. The different focus of the industry determines which drill rig tools are needed and how they are to be used.
